Coin Street, London

 History 

  • 1970’s was a derelict slump

  • Unused office spaces

  • Shops and facilities closing due to low footfall, schools closed as no children in area

  • Coin Street Action Group was created as a developer came in wanting to improve the area

  • Landowner was given the opportunity to choose which scheme was best for the site

  • GLC had acquired all 13 acres

  • The campaign wanted to make this a community-led development

  • They needed an income stream, small amount for the first phase, car park funded most of this as they needed architects with special skills

  • Large proportion of the community were on the housing waiting list

  • The residential area was only for those on the waiting list, could not have been bought to allow it so stay affordable

  • Creating public realm, themed festivals, all owned by Coin Street

 The Area Today 

  • Being located right next to Waterloo Station creates opportunities for the area

  • With the development completely changing this place and its identity form derelict to having a vibrant community area 

  • Attracting millions of visitors and Londoners to the area

 Ideas 

  • Mixed-use neighbourhood 

  • Strong residential and business community

  • Better access to facilities and services 

  • Childcare centre

  • Out of school youth clubs

  • Conference, meeting, and training spaces

  • Parents and family support programmes 

  • Access to specialist hospitals for use and training

 Our Ideas 

Even though this project wasn't a waterfront regeneration, it had such a successful response with the community, we want to bring these ideas and ways into our development to help create the same style, in bringing both the new and old community together
